The dominant feature of “Själens spegel” piece is the penetrating eye. Eyes are the most important, the most striking detail in my recent art work. The eyes will follow you wherever you walk around the exhibition. I see eyes as a window through which we see the spirit of the human soul. Eyes lead us openly, deeply to our innermost feelings.

Here describes Ludmila her work:
Most of artworks has generally its own language. You could say it is beyond a concept.
Since my mother died suddenly in 1997 I have been able to work through sorrow with help of my paintings. This short step between life and death sharpened my awareness of the existential issues of life and my subjects took on an ethereal aspect in the form of contemporary “icons”. What fascinates me most in the art of icons is the deep sensitivity they radiate.
My reliefs do not realistically represent any events or figures; rather they make sentiments and feelings visible or a moment of truth life. My work starts with a process by painting layer upon layer on a wooden panel. This is a technique which is similar to a thousand years of traditional icon painting. The titles are meant to guide the observer, but they also offer freedom of interpretation using one’s own reference points. The point of departure is a wood panel whose proportions and angles accommodate the composition; each piece is designed and cut individually for each work. Craftsmanship/technique will always be secondary. It is the content and expression which is the most important. It should be as strong as possible and unique as possible. To give the surface structure and character of its own, I use a special structure paste where I create several layers and build up a “living surface” with a pallet knife. It becomes a three dimensional painting; something between sculpture and painting.
I use mainly acrylic paint because it is an active, volatile material that, no matter how much one knows about it, one can never know completely. Acrylic paint and its companion various media that can be put in any order – opaque, transparent, cracking, modeling etc - give an expressive range of possibilities (always slightly out of control) that cannot be matched by any other painting medium. It engages issues of alchemy and mystery that resist the deadening ambition of the modern world to control everything, absolutely.
For me it is very easy to say the art must first touch the soul. It is the attachment to the soul that we deeply need. It is what moves us. It is not simply a question of what makes sense; it is deeper than that. When that inner part of ourselves is engaged, we are truly alive.
For many years I was fascinated with the expression “eyes are the window to the soul”. I thought about its meaning often. I watched people, how their eyes changed with different emotions, how sometimes an emotion could be conveyed through eyes without a single word. It has become one of my favorite subjects. The eyes convey many different things to me, such as knowledge, one’s highest power, spirit, soul, an observer within us. Eyes surveying several directions can represent self-awareness, seeking wisdom, and expanding one’s vision to seek beyond current understanding.
The eye as a symbol has been around almost as long as Man has been drawing. Different cultures and societies have incorporated the eye as a symbol of knowledge, providence, and divine direction.
The eye is a powerful symbol representing not only the search for wisdom, but also the need for protection from a higher power that watches from above this physical plane. It appears in ancient hieroglyphics and it is still used today. Divine guidance is also represented with an all-seeing eye. This symbol might mean different things to different cultures, but it is commonly associated with knowledge, foresight, power and/or protection. Christianity also views the eye as a symbol of the all-knowing and ever present God. In dreaming, the meaning of eyes indicates an opening into a new dimension:
- The eye may be a symbol of wisdom, knowledge, perception, an inner source of (self-) knowledge.
- It’s a symbol of your true self, the self that is your destiny to attain, to develop and become.
- The eye may symbolize your way of looking at things, yourself and others. In this way your eyes represent yourself; in this sense all eyes are 'soulful' - through them you make known your inner self.
The work of Ludmila Pawlowska appears regularly in the art marketplace mostly through art galleries and churches. The condition of the painting is excellent, indicating good care and conservation. This evaluation of the subject painting is made primarily from its relationship to similar works sold.
